Who We Are
St. Mark's is highly visible in the Toledo area for its ministry to
the poor and marginalized, and for its broad-based spiritual programs
offered to the larger community. Our education program is focused on
raising questions rather than on providing answers. Our liturgy is progressive,
gender-inclusive, and spiritually relevant for our community. We are
well known for our hospitality, our open invitation, and our warm
welcome. We're a congregation willing to take risks as we depend upon a
strong faith in a loving and abundant God.
A Brief History
Our congregation was formed in 1889 as a small group of Episcopalians
living at the end of the trolley tracks in the new affluent neighborhood
of Toledo's "West End." By 1905, the present sanctuary
was built in the "perpendicular Gothic" style from plans drawn
by noted church architects Cram, Goodhue, and Ferguson. The
chancel/choir was completed in 1918 and the parish hall in 1927.
Although St. Mark's has a grand heritage of strong ministry for many
decades this past century, the congregation experienced significant
decline from the late 1960's to 1990. In the past decade, a new vision
has brought renewed life through growth in numbers, ministry, and
spirit.
