About the Labyrinth
The labyrinth has long been a part of human culture.
It is found in the art of many cultures. Within the Christian tradition,
labyrinths were located at cathedrals during the Middle Ages when it
became too dangerous for people to make pilgrimages to Jerusalem.
These labyrinths were symbolic pilgrimages. Today, labyrinths
are used by people of many faith traditions (and no particular faith tradition)
as a form of walking meditation, a form of contemplative prayer.
The Labyrinths at St. Mark's
St. Mark's currently has two labyrinths. The St. Mark's
Community Labyrinth was dedicated in the summer of 2001. Painted in
a secluded corner of the parking lot, the Community Labyrinth was the
result of Brandon Levin's Eagle Scout project. It is a classical
seven-circuit labyrinth that is available to walk anytime. On Sunday
mornings, when the weather is nice, some people get to church early to
walk this labyrinth before services.
The labyrinth in CrossRoads, the renovated gymnasium on the third floor, is a
Chartres labyrinth. It was created by Donna Steppe and Jolene Miller and
dedicated in April 2002. The CrossRoads labyrinth is available whenever the church is open and the space is not being used for events (such as yoga class); call the church for details: 419.244.3707. It is also open for special events. NOTE: The CrossRoads labyrinth is located on the third floor of the church and there
is currently no elevator.
